05

Multi-Building Systems

Grand master hierarchies spanning multiple buildings or campuses with unified, documented key control.

A properly designed master key hierarchy gives every keyholder exactly the access they need — and nothing more.

What Every Property Manager in Johnson County Should Know

If you manage an apartment complex, office building, or multi-tenant commercial property in Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, or Shawnee — a master key system is not a luxury. It's the operational foundation that keeps your maintenance staff moving, your tenants secure, and your key accountability intact.

Who Needs a Master Key System

Apartment complexes and multi-family properties are the most common use case — maintenance staff need access to all units while residents hold individual change keys. Office buildings need department-level masters with restricted cross-access. Retail centers need individual tenant keys plus a building master for management.

How We Design Your System

But a master key system is only as useful as its documentation. A system without records is a liability — if keys go missing or employees leave, you have no clear picture of who has access to what. Every system we install includes a complete key bitting list, cylinder record by door location, and key issuance log.

Key Control — The Difference That Matters

We design around your organizational structure, facility layout, and key control requirements — not the other way around. Before cutting a single key, we produce a full hierarchy diagram and hardware specification for your review. Changes are easier to make on paper than after installation.

A master key system assigns individual change keys to specific doors while master keys open multiple doors within a defined group. A grandmaster key opens everything in the system. The hierarchy is created by engineering specific pin combinations into each cylinder — it's mechanical, not electronic.

In many cases, yes. If your existing cylinders are re-keyable, we can often build a master key system without replacing hardware. We assess your existing locks and advise on compatibility before quoting.

Every system we install includes a complete key bitting list, cylinder record by door location, key issuance log, and hierarchy diagram. These records are yours to keep — they're essential for managing the system over time.

A standard master key system does not prevent unauthorized duplication. Any key can be copied at a hardware store. For true key control, we recommend a restricted key system using Medeco or Mul-T-Lock cylinders — keys can only be duplicated with documented authorization from the system owner.
